JM Bullion, founded in 2011 and now owned by NYSE-listed Gold.com (formerly A-Mark Precious Metals), is a bullion retailer rather than a gold IRA provider — it supplies metal into a self-directed IRA you hold elsewhere. Its standout feature is genuine: a 24/7 self-service buyback portal that lets you sell back online without calling anyone, which nobody else on this list offers. It also carries the most significant security incident of any company we rank, and that has to be weighed.

JM Bullion Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class self-service on both sides: buy and sell online without a salesperson
  • Clear, published transaction terms and competitive premiums with volume and military discounts
  • Free choice of IRA custodian rather than a fixed dealer panel
  • Backed by an NYSE-listed parent with deep supply and logistics

Cons

  • Suffered a five-month payment-card skimming breach in 2020 that captured card numbers and CVV codes
  • Rated only BB by the Business Consumer Alliance — several grades below its peers
  • 198 BBB complaints in three years, with 122 in the last twelve months, mostly delivery-related
  • No published IRA fee schedule at all, and 13% of Trustpilot reviews are one star

Self-service, both directions

Buying bullion online without a salesperson is increasingly common. Selling it back that way is not. JM Bullion's buyback portal runs around the clock: you lock a price, ship the metal and get paid, with no phone call and no negotiation. For anyone who has experienced the industry's standard liquidation process — call a rep, be talked out of it, be quoted a number you cannot verify — this is a meaningful structural advantage.

The minimum is $1,000; below that the company points you to a local dealer directory. Product pages are also unusually good, carrying real detail on history, specification, weight and condition rather than marketing copy.

The 2020 data breach

Between 18 February and 17 July 2020, a payment-card skimmer ran on JM Bullion's website. Malicious code captured customer names, addresses, card numbers, expiry dates and CVV security codes at checkout — roughly five months of exposure. The company was alerted to suspicious activity in early July 2020 and disclosed publicly in late October, a gap of three to four months after detection.

A class action followed and was settled. Be careful with the numbers here, because they are widely misreported: plaintiffs' counsel valued the settlement at around $14.8 million including identity-theft protection and other non-cash relief, but the actual cash fund was $250,000, paying up to $100 for California residents and up to $60 elsewhere.

This was six years ago and the company has operated without a repeat since. We do not treat it as disqualifying. We do think anyone about to enter card details should know it happened, and should consider paying by cheque or wire — which is cheaper anyway thanks to the 4% discount.

Ratings, and one that stands out

JM Bullion holds an A+ accredited rating with the BBB and a Trustpilot score of about 4.5 across roughly 2,500 reviews. Two figures complicate that picture. The Business Consumer Alliance grades it BB — several rungs below the AAA held by most companies on this list, and notably weak for a dealer of this size. And 13% of its Trustpilot reviews are one star, nearly triple APMEX's share despite similar headline scores.

Its BBB file shows 198 complaints over three years with 122 in the most recent twelve months, dominated by delivery and service issues. The recurring theme is shipping delays with poor proactive communication — paid orders going weeks without tracking updates, and slow support responses during demand spikes.

Two things worth disclosing

First, corporate structure. JM Bullion's parent also owns Provident Metals, Silver.com, BGASC and Goldline, among others. Several dealer sites that look like independent competitors when you are price-shopping are in fact the same company.

Second, a related-party point: the logistics operation commonly associated with JM Bullion's IRA metal shares its corporate parent. That is not improper, and the arrangement is ordinary in this industry — but if part of your reason for choosing a depository is independence from the dealer, ask specifically who holds the metal and who owns them.

Note also that the parent, then trading as A-Mark, settled a CFTC action in September 2022 over sales practices for more than $1 million, without admitting or denying the findings. That action concerned sibling brand Goldline, not JM Bullion — we mention it as parent-level context, not as a mark against this business.

Our Verdict

JM Bullion earns its place on the strength of the best self-service experience in the sector, particularly the round-the-clock buyback nobody else offers, plus competitive premiums and clearly published transaction terms. It scores lowest of the companies we rank because of the 2020 card breach, a weak BCA grade and a delivery-complaint trend going the wrong way. Suitable for confident, hands-on buyers; not the place to start if you want guidance.
