Companies We Left Out — and Why

A ranking is only as honest as what it refuses to list. These firms were reviewed and kept off the table.

Rosland Capital — ceased operations

Do not send this company money. Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 on 2 July 2026 in the Central District of California (case 2:26-bk-16650) and has stopped trading: the website is down, the phones are disconnected, and the filing indicates the business held no metals inventory at all. Roughly 617 customers are owed north of $60 million — about $49 million in orders that were paid for but never delivered, plus some $11.8 million in buyback obligations it could not honour. The BBB has pulled its rating and posted a bankruptcy alert against 159 complaints in three years; the Business Consumer Alliance has downgraded it to a D. The mechanism matters more than the name: Rosland took payment and bought the metal afterwards, so when prices ran up, orders became unfundable. Warning signs were public years earlier — Washington State fined the company in 2022 over deliveries running more than 28 days past payment. Note that many affiliate 'best of 2026' lists still rank Rosland with a stale A+ badge and a live referral link.

Oxford Gold Group

Excluded outright. The BBB revoked the company's accreditation on 25 June 2024 for failing to address disputes in good faith, and its rating fell to an F. Complaints on file describe customers whose metals were never delivered to a depository after retirement funds had been transferred. The company's website has since gone dark and it appears to be out of business. We would not send anyone to this firm under any circumstances.

Lear Capital

Excluded on regulatory record, which our methodology treats as disqualifying regardless of current service quality. The New York Attorney General sued Lear in June 2021 over undisclosed commissions — alleged to run as high as 33% — charged largely to elderly investors, and announced a $6 million settlement in 2022 that required clear fee disclosure and a 24-hour cancellation window. The company subsequently went through Chapter 11, distributing roughly $5.5 million to investors under a multi-state settlement reached while dozens of state securities regulators were investigating. Lear operates today and has committed to reformed disclosure practices, and you will find it ranked on other comparison sites; we think the history belongs in front of anyone weighing it.

Priority Gold

A close call we resolved against inclusion. Priority Gold has an A+ accredited BBB rating, a AAA grade from the Business Consumer Alliance, strong review scores and a genuinely detailed published buyback policy — on the surface it belongs on the list. But its BBB file carries 38 complaints over three years, and the recurring theme is the one thing this site exists to warn about: customers alleging they were charged premiums far above market without those premiums being disclosed, in one case claiming roughly $111,000 paid for gold worth about $46,000 at spot. Those are allegations, not findings, and the company disputes this characterisation of its pricing. We are not prepared to rank a dealer whose complaint file reads that way while it declines to publish prices. (Separately: claims circulating online about a state regulatory investigation into Priority Gold do not check out against the regulator's own records, and we won't repeat them.)

Patriot Gold Group

Left out on sales practice rather than paperwork. The company holds an A+ BBB rating and its customer reviews skew positive, but it has been repeatedly flagged in the trade press for fear-based selling, and reviewers report difficulty getting firm buyback quotes and patchy follow-up once the sale closes. Those are the exact behaviours our scoring penalises.

Monetary Gold

A borderline call. The firm holds an A+ BBB rating and solid consumer ratings, but reviewers have alleged urgency-driven sales tactics and reported gaps between quoted prices and final selling prices. Pricing you cannot pin down before you commit is disqualifying for a list built on cost transparency.

Home-storage 'IRA' promoters

Not a single company but a category we exclude on principle. Any firm marketing a 'home storage', 'checkbook LLC' or 'self-storage' gold IRA is selling a structure the IRS and US tax courts have rejected. Taking personal possession of IRA metals is treated as a distribution, with tax and — under age 59½ — a 10% penalty on the full amount.

Why Invest in a Gold IRA?

A gold IRA is a self-directed retirement account that holds physical precious metals instead of — or alongside — paper assets. Gold has historically held its value through inflationary periods and market shocks, which is why many savers use it to diversify a portfolio that is otherwise all stocks and bonds. The trade-off: metals pay no income and carry storage and administration costs, so most independent guidance keeps them to roughly 5–10% of a portfolio.

How to Choose a Gold IRA Company

Four things separate the good providers from the expensive ones. Fees: look past the flat setup and storage charges to the dealer spread — the markup over spot price is where this industry earns its living. Reputation: check BBB and BCA ratings, Trustpilot volume, and how long the firm has been in business. Storage and custody: your metal must sit with an IRS-approved custodian and depository; segregated storage costs more but keeps your coins yours. Sales culture: favor companies that educate over ones that push urgency, fear, or "exclusive" premium coins.

Types of Gold Investments

Bullion bars and coins — American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs and approved bars — are the standard choice for IRAs and the best value per ounce. Premium and collectible coins carry much higher markups and are generally not IRA-eligible; treat pitches for them as a red flag. Outside a retirement account you can also hold gold ETFs and mining stocks, which trade like securities but give up the physical-possession angle that draws most gold IRA investors in the first place. Our guides section covers each route in depth.

Gold IRA FAQs

What is a gold IRA?

A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical precious metals — gold, silver, platinum or palladium — instead of (or alongside) paper assets. It follows the same tax rules as a conventional IRA, but the metals must meet IRS purity standards and be stored with an approved custodian and depository rather than at home.

How much money do I need to open a gold IRA?

Minimums vary widely by provider. Some companies accept accounts from around $5,000–$10,000, while education-heavy providers such as Augusta Precious Metals require $50,000. Our comparison table lists the minimum investment for every company we review.

What fees should I expect?

Typical costs are a one-time setup fee (roughly $50–$150), an annual custodian/maintenance fee (roughly $75–$300) and an annual storage fee (roughly $100–$300). The larger hidden cost is usually the dealer spread — the markup between the metal's spot price and what you pay. Many providers run promotions that waive fees for the first years; always confirm current pricing directly.

Which metals are allowed in a gold IRA?

The IRS requires minimum fineness of 99.5% for gold, 99.9% for silver and 99.95% for platinum and palladium. Common eligible products include American Gold Eagles (a specific exception despite their 91.67% fineness), Canadian Maple Leafs and approved bars from accredited refiners. Collectible and numismatic coins are generally not eligible.

Can I roll over my 401(k) into a gold IRA?

Yes. Most gold IRA companies specialize in rollovers from 401(k)s, 403(b)s, TSPs and existing IRAs. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer is the safest route because the money never touches your hands and no withholding or 60-day deadline applies.

Can I store the gold at home?

No. Metals held in an IRA must be stored at an IRS-approved depository under a qualified custodian. Taking personal possession of IRA metals is treated as a distribution, which can trigger taxes and early-withdrawal penalties. 'Home storage gold IRA' pitches are a well-known red flag.

Is a gold IRA a good investment?

It depends on your goals. Gold can hedge inflation and diversify a portfolio, but it pays no dividends or interest and carries extra costs for storage and administration. Most independent guidance suggests limiting precious metals to a modest slice of a retirement portfolio — commonly cited as around 5–10%. We are not financial advisors; consider consulting one before investing.

What happens if the gold IRA company I bought through goes out of business?

It depends entirely on whether your metal actually reached a depository. Your dealer, your IRA custodian and your depository are three separate businesses. Once metal is bought and vaulted, it is held by the custodian at the depository in your account's name, so a dealer failing does not put it at risk — you can move the account to another custodian or dealer. The danger is the gap in between: if you have paid a dealer but the metal has not yet been delivered to the vault, you are an unsecured creditor of that dealer. This is not hypothetical — Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 in July 2026 owing roughly 617 customers more than $60 million, much of it for orders that were paid for but never delivered. The practical protections are to insist on prompt delivery to the depository, get written confirmation from the custodian that the metal has arrived, and treat long or vague delivery timelines as a serious warning sign.

How did you rank these companies?

We score each provider across five weighted categories: trustworthiness, fees and pricing transparency, product range and storage options, customer support, and educational resources. Ratings from the BBB, BCA and Trustpilot feed the trust score. Our full methodology page explains the process — and advertising partnerships never change a company's score.

The Bottom Line

A gold IRA is a legitimate way to hold physical metals inside a tax-advantaged retirement account — provided you pick a provider that is transparent about costs and patient in its sales process. Compare fee schedules in writing, insist on standard bullion, keep metals to a sensible slice of your portfolio, and use the rankings above as your shortlist. When you're ready, Augusta Precious Metals is our highest-scored provider of September 2026.
